Why do I need BTA travel insurance if I already have a European Health Insurance Card?

When going on holiday, take the European Health Insurance Card with you, which may be useful in case of a medical emergency that will be provided abroad.

Upon presentation of the European Health Insurance Card, Estonian residents will receive the necessary medical care in the territory of the European Union countries, as well as in Great Britain, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland under the same conditions as insured persons residing in these countries.

Treatment of an illness that unexpectedly arises during a stay in another European Union country is considered necessary medical care. The necessary treatment must be medically justified and the doctor must take into account the expected duration of the treatment and the nature of the medical care.

The European Health Insurance Card can be ordered free of charge, more information on how to apply for and receive it can be found on the website of the Health Insurance Fund.

The European Health Insurance Card does not cover all costs that may be associated with the necessary medical care. The client will have to pay the following costs: visit fee, bed day fee, self-responsibility for medication, translation costs, etc.) at the prices of the country of residence. The card does not cover transport costs between countries and the costs of seeing a private doctor, which are very significant. The European Health Insurance Card also does not provide protection against other possible risks that may arise during trips and visits abroad.

Example of the need for the BTA European Health and Travel Insurance Card:

An Estonian resident travelling to another European Union country had a sudden deterioration of his health condition, as a result of which he was hospitalized. As soon as his condition improved, he was allowed to return to Estonia. His medical bill totally €24,000. Given that he was carrying a European Health Insurance Card, he did not have to cover the entire amount from his personal funds. The European Health Insurance Card covered 75 per cent of the medical costs (€18,000). He would have had to pay the remaining 25% (EUR 6,000) himself if he did not have a BTA travel insurance policy. Medical evacuation expenses, which are not covered by the European Health Insurance Card, amounted to €4,300.

If the client had not purchased BTA travel insurance, in addition to the guarantee provided by the European Health Insurance Card, he would have had to pay 10,300 euros from his personal funds for treatment and medical evacuation provided in a clinic abroad. In this case, BTA covered the entire amount.

Before travelling or taking a business trip, we recommend that you:

• Find out if you need a visa to enter the country;

• Ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip. In some countries, by law, your passport must be valid for at least three months or even six months after the planned end of your trip. For this reason, we recommend that you contact the embassy of the country concerned to clarify the requirements for your travel document;

• Familiarise yourself with the information on the website of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where various visa requirements and other travel-related information are listed. There you can also find warnings about countries where there may be hostilities or other threats;

• When travelling to European Union countries, be sure to take with you the European Health Insurance Card, which can be obtained from the Health Insurance Fund (phone +372 669 6630);

• When travelling to exotic countries where there is a risk of contracting yellow fever, cholera, hepatitis A, B or other dangerous diseases, consult with medical professionals about the need for vaccination. Information about vaccinations can be found on the Health Checkout website;

• Find out what you can and cannot carry in your luggage when travelling within and outside the European Union. The relevant information can be found on the Tax and Customs Board's website;

• If you are travelling by air, find out in advance about your rights to compensation and assistance from the airline in case of flight cancellation or delay, denied boarding, damaged or lost baggage. This information can be found on the website of the Consumer Protection Council.
